Insert head here

This is what I feel like most of the time. Once I remove my head, I'm sure things will start flowing.(Ha! No pun intended, I swear. I just got that myself).
Between, writing articles, fiction, non-fiction and painting furniture, I get lost in what I'm really doing. I'm having fun, don't get me wrong, but I am still getting to know myself in this free state of mind and play. It's not really free. Everything has to come with a bit of discipline. It's hard to be your own authority figure, especially when you don't like authority.

But for now here's the article that was written in accordance with the interview.
My friend Terry Towery, did some editing for me. Go check it out, if you haven't already.

  1. Honestly? The first thing I think about is my kids. What kind of example do I want to set for them? If they can get up and go to (the dreaded) school everyday, I can get up and work for myself. I won't tell them to do anything that I won't do. So if they have to sit and do homework, then I have to do my work also.

I too, got out of the corporate world, the union, all of it, because I want to direct my own life.

I'm easy with myself. I do what I'm inspired to do for the day. I do go out and play, but I limit myself.

What I found was the moment I tell myself I can't do something, I want to do it. I obsess to the point of not being able to focus. So I go play for a bit. I have to be honest with myself about what I am using for distraction and what I truly need to do for myself.

I write about what I want to write about for the day. I paint if I want to paint.

I refuse to think negatively about myself and that really helps.

Sometimes I crank the stereo and that gets me going. Sometimes the treadmill, sometimes just sanding a piece of furniture because that requires no thought, no strenuous activity, I can just stand there and sand.

The most helpful is talking with someone who's on the same page and encouraging each other. Not competing, encouraging.

There are so many things and what worked one day, may not work the next day, so I take minute and then go with it.

Just have fun! Life is about fun and love.

You have something published! You are doing than better that you feel. Trust me. ;)

  2. If you think about it...isn't it better to stick your head up your own ass than someone else's?

    I mean it's your shit...right?

I agree with everyone else, a great quote for freelance and independent writers. That's another great article you've got up there, keep them coming!

  5. LOL! Love the picture! That's how I feel a lot of the time too. It's a good thing I pulled my head out of my ass and things started flowing this week...pun intended. ;)

I too have a problem with authority. If the man won't let me buy donuts at the grocery store, I binge on donuts at work for a week. I'm not joking.

    VIVA LA DONUTS!!

  7. Kellie ~ Definitely better to see your own colon.

Mel ~ It's so nice to know I'm not alone.

Marty ~ Thank you. I will do my best.

Hannah ~ That IS a great picture, I agree. I'm glad your flow has regulated. VIVA LA DONUTS!

Annie ~ We are still living for ourselves, our list of people has just gotten bigger, that's all.

If we don't do what makes us happy, then it's impossible to fully give of ourselves to those we love. There is a fine line between self-love and being selfish.

  8. Wow! You hit so many points for me too. I can find 100 reasons not to do what I am suppose to be doing. I have three writing projects and to be honest with my self I have 5 only 3 have exact deadlines. Your blog hit home.

I read your article and sorry for repeating but WOW! I now know this is a discussion I need to have with both of my teenagers. I have a 15 year old boy and a 13 year old daughter. The one thing I would have added to the story is boys are used as sex slaves also.

Loved both the blog and the article great teaching tool for me and my kids.

  10. Gina,
May I have your permission to use that photo sometime on my blog? It just seems, I don't know, appropriate somehow. ;)

  11. Teresa ~ Yeah, I drive my kids crazy with all the information I find. Those poor kids, half the time they don't know if they're comin' or goin'.

    Mel ~ We're probably connected somehow. ;)

Terry ~ Of course you can. I knew you would find it quite humorous. Good to hear from you. It seems you've been quite busy posting your character sketches and all.

  12. I also have a hard time doing what I suppose to do, I found sometimes 1000 of things better to do than what I have to, I also have problems with authoritative figures, especially when it is through imposition, instead of talk and negotiation.
